CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Sold. A Charleston landmark has a new owner after a business closes its doors.

About a dozen people showed up Wednesday for an auction at Save Supply. The business shut down earlier this year, leading the owner to auction it off.

The building has a lot of history in Charleston. Built in the late 1800s, it has a very special history for Monty Coles. Save Supply has been in his family since the 1930s.

"I have a lot of fond memories,” Coles said. “The people of West Virginia have been great to us, and it's been fun."

So great that Coles said his sales this past March were the best he’s had in years.

But unfortunately, it wasn’t enough. The struggling economy hit his business; at one point, his former staff of 40 dwindled to 10.

"Our traffic just dropped off to practically nothing,” Coles said. “And then when that storm hit in June, we sat here for three weeks looking at each other, and this is the time to get out."

The building sold for $307,000. Coles was hoping to get at least $325,000 but said he’s glad to get it sold.

"When you have a business like this, you're with it 24/7," he said. "I took a vacation last week, the first vacation that I did not get a business call on in 40 years. It was unreal. It was a real vacation."

Coles plans on taking more of those vacations. He sad he wants to spend more time with his family now that the building is sold.

As for the future of the building, that’s still uncertain. The buyer hasn’t been identified.

The sale will be considered final later this year.
