CABELL COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A man from Cabell County wanted on child porn charges has died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Florida, according to West Virginia State Police.
Richard Garettson, 45, was wanted by WVSP troopers on five counts of possession of child pornography.
Troopers say U.S. Marshals went to take Garettson into custody about 2 a.m. Wednesday at a hotel in Florida. When they knocked on the door, they heard a single gunshot and found Garettson, who died a short time later.
Back on January 24, State Police went to Garettson’s apartment in Barboursville where they served the warrants on the child porn charges. After that, troopers say Garettson never got back with them.
Then on February 3, he resigned from his job of 20 years.. Troopers say he told co-workers that he inherited land in the Clarksburg area and was moving there to manage gas drilling operations.
"We are pleased that he isn't on the streets anymore and he doesn't pose a threat to anyone," WVSP Lt. Michael Baylous said. "It's unfortunate that he chose suicide as a way to end this, but the bottom line is that nobody else got hurt. Law enforcement wasn't hurt and nobody else in the public."
