UPDATE 6/26/13 @ 6:45 p.m.
CLAY COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A federal drug investigation became deadly Wednesday morning when police say they tried to enter the trailer of Richard Kohler.

Police tell WSAZ.com Kohler was pointing a long rifle at officers when they entered his home. That’s when an officer fired at Kohler, killing him.

It happened about 6 a.m. Wednesday along Maysel Laurel Ridge Road in Clay County.

Neighbors said the early morning gunshots scared them out of bed.

“I heard these real fast shots like 'bam, bam, bam,' twice,” neighbor Mary Murdock said.” It was really loud. It was loud enough to wake us up, and it really scared me. I didn't know what was going on .”

Police have not said if Kohler actually fired any shots, but said no officers were injured.

"We use the best planning, the best resources. We try to heighten them all we can to maximize the safety for all the stakeholders involved, be it the officers, the suspects and the citizens," West Virginia State Police Capt. D.L. Lemmon of the State Police said Wednesday during a news conference.

Neighbors we talked to say they noticed unusual amounts of traffic going in and out of the home but say they were surprised to hear Kohler even owned a gun.

“I mean, I can't see him just open fire like that, but you know when all that comes after you, you never know what somebody's going to do,” Christina Murdock said.

It’s also unclear if drugs were found in the home.

Officers were seen wearing HazMat suits at the home late Wednesday afternoon.
