UPDATE: 4/12/12 @ 10 p.m.
MASON COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A man and woman are behind bars, being held without bond, after an alleged kidnapping.

William R. McDermitt, 39, and Elizabeth Caroline McDermitt, 41, were arrested Wednesday night in Mason County, W.Va.

William is charged with kidnapping and malicious wounding. Elizabeth is charged with accessory before and after the fact to kidnapping.

Beverly Ross has lived near the McDermitts for 13 years. She says she was shocked by their actions.

"They're peaceable people," she said. "I've never known of any violence or anything."

According to the criminal complaint, the incident started after the McDermitt's home on Oshel Road was broken into on Tuesday.

Police say Elizabeth was driving in Point Pleasant on Wednesday and William, from the passenger seat, told her to follow David Greene's vehicle. According to the complaint, when Greene stopped at a red light, William got out of the couple's vehicle and went up to Greene's car and assaulted him.

After the assault, the couple is accused of continuing to follow Greene, 20, until he stopped again.

According to the complaint, William removed Greene from his vehicle, placed zip ties around his wrist like handcuffs and put him in the McDermitt's vehicle without Greene's consent.

Elizabeth drove the vehicle to their home on Oshel Road and the victim says William took him to the backyard and accused him of breaking into his home and threatened him with a gun.

Greene told investigators that William hit him in the head with the gun and made him get on his ATV and took him to a field behind the home. In the field, William allegedly punched and kicked Greene, cut off his belt and beat him across the back with it and tried to choke him with it.

Greene says he tried to run from William, but William kept pace with him on his ATV. Greene finally quit trying to run and says William cut his hair from his head with a knife then left him in the field.

The victim crawled to a home and was taken to a local hospital.

Neighbor Dylan Rupe says he was stunned to hear how violent William allegedly became.

"I knew he (William) had a temper," Rupe said, "but I just couldn't imagine him being like that. I guess everybody has their breaking point though."

Rupe says he’s most concerned about the couple’s two children now that their parents are in jail.

"He went a little too far,” Rupe said. “He's got two kids. He should have thought of them first."

Investigators say he has a broken leg, lacerations to the face and back, internal injuries and a possible broken nose.

The McDermitt's are being held in the Western Regional Jail.
