HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – A barge in danger of sinking is forcing dozens of boat owners out of the Ohio River.

The Huntington Yacht Club Marina barge at Harris Riverfront Park has a leak and could sink if not removed; meaning those who dock their boats at the marina must also move their boats -- and fast.

Marina Manager J.R. Ramey tells WSAZ.com the deadline is Sunday. and says Sunday has always been the deadline.

“They've known for at least 3 weeks, 2 ½ weeks because a week and a half ago they were getting their dock boxes and their grills and stuff taking them home,” Ramey said.

Boat owner Dennese Deaton denied that statement, saying “We had five weeks to move our boat. That was October 6.”

Marina management tells WSAZ.com written notices of the deadline to be put out were not sent.

“I understand the need, but I also think they should have given the boaters a timeline and a plan, a phone call is not a plan,” Deaton said.

Ramey was unclear what consequences Deaton would face if her boats are not removed by Sunday, but likely said the issue would have to be resolved with the city of Huntington or the U.S. Coast Guard.
