CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The deadline is approaching for residents in four counties in West Virginia to apply for unemployment assistance through FEMA.

Residents who live in Kanawha, Nicholas, Fayette and Raleigh counties have until October 22 to file a claim for Disaster Unemployment Assistance.

This assistance is for residents who were unemployed because of the Derecho that blew threw in June

The assistance is intended for those who are not eligible for benefits under a state’s regular unemployment insurance program. Farmers, the self-employed and others who are denied regular unemployment insurance benefits may now be eligible for Disaster Unemployment Assistance.

Funds for this program are provided by the federal government and do not come from the state employer payroll taxes used to finance regular unemployment benefits.

If you still need information on how to file a claim, you can contact WorkForce West Virginia at 1-800-252-5627.
