KINGWOOD, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- - The West Virginia Medical Examiner has identified the remains of a body found in the Cheat River as that of Gatlin Jones of Clintonville, W.Va.
Jones,17, had been missing since he walked away from the West Virginia National Guard ChalleNGe Academy at Camp Dawson in Kingwood, WV on July 18.
The Mountaineer ChalleNGe Academy is a program that trains and mentors at-risk youth to become contributing members of society.
The Academy uses a program of eight core components -- Life Coping Skills, Job Skills, Health and Hygiene, Citizenship, Education Excellence, Service to Community, Leadership/Followership and Physical Training, according to news release.
“The men and women of the West Virginia National Guard and the staff of the ChalleNGe Academy send their heartfelt condolences to cadet Jones’s family and friends,” said Major Gen. James A. Hoyer, West Virginia Adjutant General.
“We are committed to doing everything we can to ensure the health and well being of the students of the WV ChalleNGe Academy., Major Gen. Hoyer said.
The Academy consists of a five month residential phase followed by a one year follow-up program which includes the support of a trained Mentor. This particular class began on July 16.
