Deer Season Underway in W.Va.

KANAWHA COUNTY, W. Va. (WSAZ) -- Anticipation is high for the start of gun-buck season on Monday.

Whether you’re a first time or experienced hunter, it’s always good to remember that safety comes first.

"First and foremost, you have to wear blaze orange. For deer hunting season, you need to have 400 square inches of blaze orange on you -- from a vest to a hat to gloves," said hunting expert Ryan Hutson.

Once you’ve settled in, patience and awareness is key.

"Be careful -- there is going to be thousands of hunters in the woods tomorrow, always make sure you're looking at your target and you identify what you're wanting to shoot before you shoot it," said Hutson.

"Be patient, get in a good spot and hold still and don't get too excited and move around too much, and wait for the deer to come to you," said hunter Randy Estep.

And don’t be short-sighted – looking at your target.

"Always be aware of what's behind what you're shooting at so that you don't accidentally shoot someone -- it would be a very bad day for both you and the other person," said Estep.

Finally, always be prepared and remember to keep others in the loop in case of emergencies.

"Carry a cell phone on you, if not a cell phone a GPS or some kind of radio device and always let your loved ones know where you're going to be," said Hutson.

And that cell phone can not only be used for communication, but also in friendly competition.

"We went from walkie-talkies to now everybody has got a phone -- and we can shoot a deer and text them our picture of the deer when we shoot them so it's gone high tech," said Estep.

Going all out and shooting to bag the biggest buck during what’s expected to be a busy season.
