CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Defenders of Blair Mountain held a rally in their continuing fight to preserve a battlefield from the West Virginia coal wars.
Organizers gathered Tuesday outside the Culture Center in Charleston and presented the State Historic Preservation Office with a petition bearing more than 26,000 signatures.
The mountain was the site of a 1921 battle between unionizing coal miners and law enforcement officers, including security forces hired by coal operators.
Retired miner Joe Stanley says it's important to the American labor movement and deserves to be protected from strip mining. But several past efforts have failed.
Archaeologist Brandon Nida says a new bus tour that stops in Blair and a museum opened by Friends of Blair Mountain demonstrate the mountain's tourism potential.

The long term potential for SUSTAINABLE business growth, development and job creation around tourism is far greater than that of blasting this historic site for coal. I can actually see yearround reenactments and all sorts of site seeing ventures like those in Williamsburg taking place on the site of one of labor's largest uprisings. Not to mention the chance for the communities where this important site is located to really develop and attract business around tourism. They already got a museum which is doing well. Once we blast Blair Mountain and remove all its coal, deforest it, obliterate all the artifacts... what do we have? History? No. Because this historic place is linked solely by its scenery which made this place what it is. It'll be like visiting an ugly, un-kept grave site. Blair Mountain belongs back on the National Register of Historic Places. If developed and properly promoted right, this place has the potential of creating a lot of jobs and helping this state's economy.
How did all these protestors take warm showers this morning with the lights on.... Oh wait, it's coal duh.... Hope you're staying warm in your heated house by none other than the power of coal (=
