UPDATE 4/2/13 @ 9 p.m.
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Two events in Huntington that have become staples have become things of the past.
The Dogwood Arts and Crafts Festival, which was going into its 43rd year, was canceled, according to a spokesperson at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena. The reason given was a lack of interest from vendors.
Their hope, the spokesperson said, is that a reinvented show will be back next year.
The Huntington Rib and Music Fest was canceled, according to the arena spokesperson, because of low attendance.
"That is the most difficult part to deal with because it hurts," said Tyson Compton, director of the Cabell Huntington Convention and Visitors Bureau. "It's sad. In some ways, it's like losing a family member, so again you might have to look at how you might translate that into another event."
Blain Crabtree, who owns Bottle & Wedge in Herritage Station, noticed a void in the calendar and had the idea to do something about it.
"I went every year to Rib Fest, last year me and my wife went to the Dogwood Festival, and it's sad to see it go, but at the same time those events, those voids will be filled," Crabtree said.
He is planning a craft beer festival on Aug. 17.
"We think that is something that can also help fill the void for events this summer in Huntington," Crabtree said.
He plans to release more information as details are worked out.
The festival is held at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena.
Arena manager Brian Sipe says the festival's cancellation is due to a lack of interest from vendors.
Sipe says the arena plans to reinvent the festival and hold it next year.
The festival was scheduled for the last weekend in April. This would have been its 43rd year.
This is the second event in recent weeks to be canceled by the arena.
The Big Sandy Superstore Arena told WSAZ.com that Huntington Rib and Music Fest has been canceled. This would have been the 18th annual event at Harris Riverfront Park.
The arena told WSAZ.com that the cause for cancellation is poor attendance.
According to the arena, the staff is working to come up with an event that they hope the community will be excited about.
