Earnhardt's Grandson Charged with DUI in Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A NASCAR hopeful, who's been trying to promote his professional racing career in the Kanawha Valley, was arrested and charged with driving drunk in Charleston.

According to the criminal complaint, Bobby Dale Earnhardt, 25, of Charleston, was pulled over for speeding and squealing his tires on Washington Street. Police say that's when the officer noticed Earnhardt's speech was slurred, his eyes were glassy and a strong smell of alcohol was coming from the car.

Earnhardt told the officer he had two shots of liquor at a bar, according to the complaint.

During a field sobriety test, police say Earnhardt had a Blood Alcohol Level of .193, which is more than double the legal limit.

Earnhardt was charged with first offense DUI.

Shortly after Earnhardt was released from jail, he posted on his Facebook page that he made a terrible mistake.

"I wanted to let you all know I made a terrible mistake last night drinking and driving and I am thankful nothing bad happened from my stupidity and I know It could have," Earnhardt writes on Facebook. "I'm sorry for letting all my fans friends and family down and I hope I can make it up to each and everyone of you and in the future be a good role model. I will continue to move forward with my racing career and I hope I continue to have your support thanks."

Earnhardt is the grandson of the late Dale Earnhardt Sr. He has held meet and greets in the Charleston area to raise money for his professional racing career.

According to Earnhardt's website, he is starting his rookie season in the ARCA Truck Series. He is also scheduled to have another meet and greet Tuesday in Beckley. According to his Facebook page, Earnhardt still plans to attend the event.
