Elderly Woman Mauled by Dogs

Posted: Thu 11:48 PM, Mar 21, 2013

SCIOTO COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- After 74-year-old Emmabelle Easter was attacked by a pack of dogs near her home in Lucasville, she spent eight days in the hospital. Now, she is recovering at home.

On March 10, Easter was taking a walk on Crowe Hollow Road, where she has lived all her life, when she said she heard dogs barking. A pack of dogs circled around her and mauled her.

"They just started tearing me to pieces," Easter said. "I screamed and screamed and screamed and finally a neighbor came."

Easter said she tried to use pepper spray on the dogs, but it didn't help. She said that neighbor was able to jump in and fight off some of the dogs before calling 911.

Easter was flown to St. Mary's Medical Center and spent time in the Intensive Care Unit. She has wounds all over her arms, a bandaged and infected leg where the dogs tore off a section of skin, and staples in her scalp to close up a massive wound.

Dwayne Mehaffey, Scioto County's dog warden, said it's not the first time the dogs' owner has been cited for failure to confine and failure to register his dogs.

"This didn't have to happen. If they had taken that dog, and even made him tie it up, this wouldn't have happened," Easter said.

Three of the dogs were picked up and brought to the pound on the day of the attack. Mehaffey and another warden picked up two more today on Crowe Hollow Road and set traps to catch some of the others. They said they aren't sure exactly how many dogs the owner has, or how many attacked Easter, but they believe at least five did.

"The dogs will be taken to the vet to get checked," Mehaffey said. "[The owner] will be responsible to pay for that. Then we'll bring them back to be euthanized."

Easter has been bitten by these dogs before, though. She said it happened about two years ago. At that time, the wound was less serious and she was sent home from the hospital after nurses cleaned the bite.

While she's upset that she won't be able to walk in her own neighborhood anymore, Easter said she is more worried about the expenses of her hospital stay.

"There's gonna be lots of hospital bills," Easter said. "I've got insurance but it won't cover all this."

Beyond that, she said, she's just hoping for an apology from the dogs' owner.

"They've just got to get rid of the dogs," Easter said.

The dog warden tells WSAZ.com the dogs were quarantined to be sure they didn't have rabies and they will be euthanized.
