CLENDENIN, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Sheriff's Deputies are looking for the suspect in a home-invasion style robbery that left an elderly woman injured.
Ruby Hackney, 86, still bears the battle scars of an ordeal she says she never should have had to experience.
"There wasn't much I could do because he was a lot stronger than I was," she said.
Deputies say a man forced his way inside her home on Spencer Road and stole cash from her purse after violently grabbing her arm.
Ruby says it started when the man knocked on her door about 1:30 p.m. and asked to check her roof for leaks. She says she recently had some roof work done but didn't recognize the man, so she turned him away.
But she says he didn't take 'no' for an answer, proceeding to push his way in and then rob her.
"He's a dirty, low-down rat," Ruby said. "He probably needed those money for drugs."
Neighbors like Jason and Peggy Conley say they no longer feel safe in the area after seeing a steady increase in crime.
"It's not good when you have kids and a grandmother [figure] that you love so much," Peggy said. "Why do you have to put up with this?"
Now, they hope deputies can track down the suspect and bring him to justice.
"If I would have seen the guy I'd probably seriously hurt him," Jason said. "[Ruby] is like a grandmother to us."
Ruby says someone previously broke into her basement and stole her prescription medication. Now, she says she'll never open the door to a stranger again.
"You can't trust people anymore," she said. "That's the way I look at it."
Deputies say the suspect was a medium-sized man in his late 20s or early 30s and wore a baseball cap.
They say they also recently responded to a burglary call on that same road.
If you have any information about this crime, you're asked to call the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department.
