UPDATE 2/6/13 @ 11 p.m.
PIKE COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- A community in Kentucky is reeling with loss after what they're calling a freak accident after a high school basketball game.

Tuesday night Charles and Mona Freeman, of Feds Creek, came to East Ridge High School to watch their granddaughter play in a basketball game.

Kentucky State Police say the couple was leaving the game when their car crashed into an open gate at the entrance of the school, killing the 76-year-old grandmother in the passenger seat.

Ronnie Chaney has a son who goes to East Ridge and is a friend of the Freeman family.

"It's really tragic right now," he said. "There are not words to describe how everybody feels."

There was a boys game being played in the gym after the girls game Tuesday night. When they learned about what happened, many of those still inside, even those from the visiting team, held hands and prayed.

"It was a touching moment to see,” Chaney said.

"We’ve got a lot of heavy hearts here," East Ridge girls basketball coach Denise Campbell said. "When something tragic like this happens, we just all pull together and are there for them."

Campbell says Wednesday evening the girls basketball team went together to the family's home and brought food and tried to help comfort them.

School officials say this is not the first time someone has run into the gate, but they say it is the first time anything this serious has happened on school property.

The principal says the gate has been taken down for now.

State Police are still trying to find what caused the accident.

PIKE COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- An elderly woman has been killed in a single-vehicle crash at East Ridge High School in Pike County, Ky.

Kentucky State Police say 76-year-old Mona Gail Freeman, of Feds Creek, was a passenger in a vehicle that hit an open security gate at the exit to the school parking lot.

The accident happened Tuesday evening as the driver was leaving the school following a basketball game.

Freeman died at the scene.

School officials say the Mrs. Freeman is the grandparent of a student at the school.

There is no word from troopers if the driver was hurt in the crash, or what caused the driver to crash.
