HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- It's cold outside, but there are warm smiles and hearts this morning as Christmas dreams came true.

Bags of toys are being given out to about 500 families Friday morning. The Huntington Fire Department and the Salvation Army were having their annual Christmas toy giveaway in the west end of Huntington this morning. Each family received a bag full of toys for each child in the family.

Major Matt Riley with the Salvation Army says this will provide Christmas joy to more than 1,000 children.

"We are in tough economic times and we've had families calling that just don't have anything. We were able to meet their needs and they cried and just wanted to hug us and it means the world to them," Riley said.

Brittany Shepherd picked up bags if toys for her three children and says this is a dream come true.

"The kids are going to be so excited, it's a blessing to actually have this because its things that they love, they are going to be so happy to see it. I was amazed to see it myself honestly, it's amazing, I really am grateful for this place," Shepherd said.

The toys were made possible through private donations and the fire department's annual boot drive that you may have seen and donated to just a few weeks ago.
