UPDATE 1/7/14 @ 1:30 p.m.
LOGAN COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Investigators confirm Claire Dingess, 90, is the woman who died after her home caught fire late Monday night.

It happened on Striker Fork Road in Chapmanville about 11:15 p.m. Monday.

An assistant state fire marshal says Dingess was pulled from her living room and taken to Logan Regional Medical Center, but did not survive.

Investigators say the freezing temperatures posed extra obstacles.

"Once the firemen put water on the fire then everything that's left freezes. It does hinder determining what caused it," Asst. Fire Marshal Mark Lambert said.

They were unable to determine a cause, but say it is believed to be accidental.

They say the damage was isolated to one room, which appeared to be a laundry area.

A smoke detector has been found in the home, but it's unclear yet whether it was working.

Derrick Lowe lives across the street from Dingess. He tried to help rescue her Monday night. He says she will be greatly missed.

"She was a nice old woman; real sweet. Every time we'd come outside she'd holler at us," Derrick Lowe said. "I've just been living up here about four years. She's about one of the nicest people I've ever met."
