KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. - Family members are speaking out after a father has been arrested in connection with a deadly triple shooting.
Deputies say Roy Rodger Pittman shot and killed his 15-year-old adopted daughter, Brittany Pittman, back in May.
They say he also wounded his adopted son Matthew before shooting himself in the face when deputies arrived.
Pittman was released from the hospital Thursday and brought straight to the courtroom.
"I just don't understand why he did this, how he did this...if he snapped," said Brittany's sister Bridget Crist. "He doesn't realize how many lives he screwed up, how many people he hurt."
Bridget says her family had its share of arguments, but she never expected that one would spark such violent and irreversible consequences.
"They were arguing and [Brittany] had some short shorts on," Bridget said. "He told her to take them off and change them...and then nobody knew that he had shot Brittany. Nobody even had a clue."
A memorial was set up outside their home on Keystone Drive to honor Brittany, whom Bridget says touched many lives in the span of her own short one.
"She had so much going for her," Bridget said. "She had so many friends, she loved school. Her favorite thing to do was read."
Now, Bridget says she's left looking for answers from a father who should have been his daughter's protector - not her accused killer.
"I'd like to look him in the eye just so he can see how much he's hurt everyone," she said. "He raised me and I've never said a bad word about the man, but you can't forgive this."
The judge did not set bond for Pittman. As for his son Matthew, family members say he's out of the hospital and recovering at home.
Detectives are not releasing any theories about why the shootings happened.
