UPDATE 11/12/13 @ 3:30 p.m.
MARLINTON, W.Va. (AP) - Marlinton Mayor Joe Smith says a fire that destroyed four buildings is devastating for his city.

The Sunday fire displaced several businesses and about a dozen residents.

Media outlets report that the fire rekindled Monday.

In addition to displacing people, Smith says the fire will have a significant economic impact. He says the city has lost some of its tax base.

He also says that streets in the area, along with other businesses that weren't affected, can't be opened until one of the burned buildings is secured. He says the three-story building's roof caved in and it's not safe.

The cause of the fire hasn't been determined. Smith says fire marshals haven't entered examined the buildings because of safety concerns.

MARLINTON, W.Va. (WSAZ/AP) – Nearly an entire city block of downtown Marlinton was destroyed in a fire Sunday.

The fire was reported about 2:30 a.m.

Reports indicate that fire crews believe the fire started in the Hudson building on the upper end of Main Street and then spread to two other buildings.

The fire displaced seven businesses, along with 13 families who lived in apartments in the buildings. The Red Cross has stepped in to help them find shelter.

Marlinton Volunteer Fire Department firefighter Curtis Helton says one firefighter suffered minor injuries.

Helton says about 10 fire departments from Pocahontas County and surrounding counties fought the fire. He says the federal prison in Alderson also sent a firefighting crew of inmates.

There is no word on how the fire started.
