Former Ashland Police Officer Receives National Award
ASHLAND,Ky. (WSAZ) -- A former Ashland police officer shot in the line of duty has received a national award.
Kevin Gunderson received the Theodore Roosevelt Police Award during a ceremony in Ashland Tuesday afternoon.
The award is presented annually to police officers nationwide who have overcome a major physical obstacle or handicap.
Gunderson was shot in the neck while trying to serve a non-support warrant at a residence in Ashland on July 18, 1980. The wound left him a paraplegic.
Gunderson has been a City Commissioner in Ashland for more than 20 years. He was recently re-elected to a new two year term.
As part of the award, the Theodore Roosevelt Association made a $500 donation to the Putnam Stadium Restoration Project in Gunderson’s name.
