UPDATE: Fourth Former Officer Arraigned in Attempted Murder Plot at Regional Jail

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – The last of four former correctional officers at the Western Regional Jail in Barboursville, accused of plotting to kill an inmate inside the jail, was arraigned Thursday morning.

The four inmates were also indicted for their alleged roles in the plot.

During the hearing, bond was set at $10,000 for John Bruhin.

Bruhin is charged with one count of aiding and abetting attempted first degree murder. Bruhin will be back in court next month for a pretrial hearing.

The other former correctional officers, Steven D. Adkins, Benjamin Browning and Jeffrey Winkler, were arraigned last week

The inmates, Steven Lee Adkins, Jr., James Dennis Galloway, James Roy Michael Keeney and Jared Harris, each face attempted first-degree murder and conspiracy charges.

According to court documents, the men are accused of trying to kill Zachary Lawson, 19, inside the Western Regional Jail last October. Lawson is currently awaiting trial on sexual abuse and assault charges involving a 12-year-old boy in Mason County

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Four men who used to serve as correctional officers at the Western Regional Jail in Barboursville now find themselves on the other side of the law. The men, along with four other inmates, are accused of plotting to kill an inmate inside the jail.

Three of the former correctional officers appeared in Cabell County Circuit Court Judge Alfred Ferguson's courtroom Friday. Steven Adkins, Benjamin Browning and Jeffrey Winkler were arraigned Friday morning at the Cabell County Courthouse. The fourth officer charged, John Bruhin, was not in court.

The men are accused of plotting to kill an inmate last year, along with the four inmates, who were all arraigned last week.

The inmates, Steven Lee Adkins Jr., James Dennis Galloway, James Roy Michael Keeney and Jared Harris, each face attempted first-degree murder and conspiracy charges. The former correctional officers face accessory, or aiding and abetting attempted murder charges.

According to court documents, the men are accused of trying to kill Zachary Lawson, 19, inside the Western Regional Jail last October. Lawson is currently awaiting trial on sexual abuse and assault charges involving a 12-year-old boy in Mason County.

All three former correctional officers declined to speak to us on camera. They were all released on $10,000 bond. They'll be back in court June 4.

WSAZ.com tried contacting Joe Delong, who is the executive director of West Virginia's Regional Jail System. However, we were told he was not in at the time to comment on the situation.
