UPDATE 5/21/13 @ 2 p.m.
WAYNE, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A former employee of the Northern Wayne Public Service District has avoided jail time by agreeing to repay the nearly $62,000 she stole from her employer.

In March, a grand jury in Wayne County indicted Tiffani Petry, 28, of Kenova, on 22 counts of embezzlement from the Northern Wayne Public Service District.

The indictment says Petry embezzled more than $37,000 from the organization between July 5, 2011 and July 13, 2012.

Wayne County Persecutor Tom Plymale tells WSAZ.com that a follow-up audit revealed the thefts were closer to $62,000.

On May 15, Plymale says Petry pleaded guilty to four counts of the indictment and agreed to repay the total amount she stole if she received probation.

Plymale says Petry has already repaid $28,000 of the nearly $62,000. He also says her former employer was more interested in getting their money back than seeing her behind bars.

West Virginia State Police said in the criminal complaint that as Petry was taking deposits to the bank, she would subtract the amount of cash that was supposed to be deposited, fill out another slip, and then keep the cash.

The complaint also indicates that Petry confessed to the crime.

During her plea hearing, Petry never said why she stole the money, according to Plymale.
