KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Four people have been charged in a theft ring at the Walmart in Quincy.
Derrick Walker, 33, of Charleston, Stephanie Woodrum, 27, of Dunbar, Temple Green, 32, of Elkview and Margie Redman, 64, of Elkview were charged with two counts of computer fraud and two counts conspiracy to commit a felony. Walker, Temple and Margie are related.
West Virginia State Police tell WSAZ.com the group was having a 9 year old relative distract clerks at the store while one them stole merchandise. Then, that person would go to the customer service to return it for a merchandise credit as another item was taken.
But police say the alleged crime doesn't end there.
Police say another person in the group would take the merchandise credit and the other stolen item through the checkout, then go to customer service to say she changed her mind and presented a receipt for a refund. The person would get cash back because the receipt didn't show what method of payment was used, according to police.
Police say the four would just switch off on who did what. Police say they stole thousands of dollars.
Police say they believe the group has done this at other Walmarts and Rite Aids in the area.
Investigators say putting the child in the mix was designed to make them not look as obvious to store employees.
