UPDATE 6/20/12 @ 6 p.m.
WHEELERSBURG, Ohio (WSAZ) -- A teenage boy is in the hospital with extensive injuries after an SUV ran him down and kept going.

It happened Tuesday night in Scioto County when the boy was trying to move a dog that had just been hit by another car.

“My injuries are a broken leg and a broken back,” 14-year-old Charlie Howell said.

Broken and badly bruised, but alive -- Charlie doesn't remember the accident -- only trying to move his friend's dog out of the road that had just been hit by a car.

“The dog followed us into the road and a car hit it and kept going. I later found out they came back to check on the dog,” Charlie said.

“Charlie was with the dog out in the middle of the intersection,” said Taylor Roush, Charlie’s girlfriend.

She saw the whole thing happen on Shela Boulevard in Sciotodale, located just outside Wheelersburg.

It was shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday, and Charlie was just leaving a choir concert at his church when his friend's dog got hit. Then, out of nowhere the car was on top of him.

“I took one step, and that's the last thing I remember. I didn't hear a car or see any headlights,” Charlie said.

“The car was coming from this way, and I saw Charlie flipping over the car and heard him scream," Taylor said. "I was just scared he was going to die."

There were no headlights, no skid marks, no brakes, no stopping.

“I mean, you could at least hear him bounce off the car. I mean you could have at least heard it,” Taylor said.

“What do you have to say to the person who hit you and didn’t bother to stop?” WSAZ.com's Carrie Cline asked.

“Nothing. If they don't have the courtesy to stop,” Charlie said.

Neighbors say they've complained about speeding on that stretch of road for a long time and hate that it came to this. The dog did not survive his injuries, and neighbors say was probably already dead when Charlie went out to move him off the road.

The Ohio Highway Patrol is working the case. They say they're looking for a black SUV with considerable front end damage.

The driver of the car likely will face serious criminal charges for leaving the scene of an accident and causing injuries.
