FLATWOODS, Ky. (WSAZ) -- Six children and three adults were able escape a house fire thanks to some quick thinking by the kid’s grandmother.
The fire broke out in the 1000-block of Turley Street in Flatwoods, Ky. late Thursday morning.
Carol Cordle was babysitting her grandchildren when one of them started yelling there was a fire.
"We ran in there and looked and the wall was on fire. My daughter started screaming so we got all the kids out of the house really fast,” said Cordle.
The fire started in the front bedroom and caught the bed on fire.
Cordle tells WSAZ.com that attempts to put out the fire failed. She says all their belongings were destroyed.
When firefighters arrived on the scene, flames were shooting out of the front of the house and a side window, according to Brent Dean, Fire Chief of the Flatwoods FD.
"If you have a fire in your house, get out and stay out and let the fire department come in and do their job because there's nothing I'm that house that's worth your life," said Dean.
The cause of the fire has not been determined. The Flatwoods, Russell and Westwood Fire Departments responded to the fire.
