HARTS, W.Va (WSAZ) -- Volunteers at the Harts Fire Department are running on little sleep and loads of adrenaline. The station has been open round the clock for a week.
"We've got a couple of couches and recliners," Chief Jason Moore said. "It's not quite home, but it's got ice and water."
Ice and water are the hot commodities. The Lincoln County school system has offered up its ice machines in idled cafeterias. That's been a huge help in meeting the need.
"That's all these people are trying to do is survive this," Assistant Chief Nick Blair said. "They gotta have water to do this. They have to have ice; those are the two main things."
The department sits close to a tri-county line, and it has seen people traveling more than 20 miles to get supplies. People are coming in from Logan, Lincoln and Wayne counties.
The volunteers plan on staying as long as it takes to meet the need.
"There's people who've lost it all," Moore said. "We've got dumpsters for spoiled food, and they're bringing it in by the truckloads. Some people don't even have money to buy gas to run their generators to stay cool."
