HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- If you don't have the flu, it's likely someone in your house does.

The flu virus is running rampant this year. If someone in your home is sick and you want to prevent yourself, and everyone else in your home, from getting sick there are some things you need to do.

The Department of Health and Human Resources suggests creating a sick room. Have the person who is ill stay mostly in one area of your home and out of the common areas. Avoid close face-to-face contact and if possible designate one person in the home to be the caregiver.

Continuously wipe down surfaces like counter tops, light switches, doorknobs, and things in the bathroom that the infected person comes into contact with regularly.

Make sure tissues and other items used by the sick person go directly into the trash can.

Washing linens and towels with soap and hot water. Avoid "hugging" the laundry when taking it to wash so you don't contaminate yourself.
