MARMET, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Organizers of a haunted hayride fundraiser have decided to change the route out of respect for those concerned about the location.
The Twin City All-Stars in Marmet had planned a haunted hayride through Marmet Memorial Gardens.
The hayride was set to stay on the road and would not interfere with any of the tombstones, but those with loved ones buried there expressed concern.
Organizers say the new location will ensure a much more successful fundraiser and was unanimously approved by city council Monday, October 15.
The starting point for the hayride has not been changed. It will still begin and end at the town hall.
Those who have loved ones buried there say they're upset. Organizers say they're taking all necessary steps to be respectful.
Rebecca Barefield visits Marmet Memorial Gardens often.
"I know it's been almost 15 years, but I still miss him like it was yesterday," Barefield said about her late husband, Wayne Adkins.
Adkins died of cancer less than two years after their wedding.
Barefield is now upset about a Halloween event happening at the cemetery.
"We just promise -- it's for the kids. It's a fundraiser for the kids. We do not want to disrespect anybody," Wynter Winnell said.
Winnell is the Twin City All-Stars cheer coach, and is organizing the haunted hayride.
Word about the fundraiser spread quickly, and Barefield didn't like what she was hearing.
"I don't think they should dress up and have a haunted house on a cemetery, or jump out from behind these tombstones. It's just not right," Barefield said.
Winnell says that's not the plan. She says the hayride will go along the road through the cemetery, and people will be dressed up and jumping out of ditches. There will be no activity on or around the tombstones
"I actually have a lot of family that's buried in the cemetery, so out of respect for all of the people in the cemetery, no one will be touching the graves," Winnell said.
If you have any concerns about the haunted hayride, organizers say you can contact them at the Twin City Stars' gym in Marmet, located at 10503 MacCorkle Ave.
