SALT ROCK, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- People living in Salt Rock have a new option for health care.
A new clinic, ran out of a single room in the Salt Rock Senior Citizen's Center, opened Tuesday.
It's an option Robert Roswall, executive director of the Cabell County Community Services, believes is a viable one.
"This gives us an opportunity to serve those people, to take care of some of the illnesses they may have. It's very much an under-served area, in the health care department. Most of the people here in Salt Rock have to go out of Salt Rock into Huntington to be transported," Roswall said.
Physicians Assistant Tom Belford, along with a nurse, will run the clinic.
"This is an area that sits right in the middle of two counties. There isn't a lot of access here to care," Belford said.
While Belford is excited to bring more care to the area, he won't be playing to any of its weaknesses.
"We will not be doing a tremendous amount of controlled substances, simply because it's a real problem for counties in southern West Virginia. We don't want to set up a presence that way," Belford said.
The clinic will also be an affordable option.
Through the help of the West Virginia Connect Program, a majority of costs will be covered for working people without insurance.
"You pay, I believe, a $30 fee. You're covered for the year. Visits are covered for a year," Belford said.
For others, there's a sliding fee.
"This is our (way) to gauge the need in the area. If the need increases or if there is an increase in demand, then we'll put further services here," Belford said.
Officials say they do expect the need to grow over time.
Doctors and administrators say they expect it to grow so much, that one day a physical clinic will be built in Salt Rock.
The clinic will be open from 2 to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
