CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Some moms in Charleston are chanting, "If Cabell County Schools can do it, we can too."
Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution came to Huntington last year. Once the TV cameras left, a New England-based company stayed behind and retrained the school cooks how to get back to cooking from scratch.
Sustainable Food Systems was in every kitchen, in every school in the county. John Turenne runs the company.
"We believe the cooks are the heart and soul of school food," Turenne says. "Many times, the best meal children get to eat all day is a school lunch. Let's make sure the ingredients are the best they possibly can be and let's leave out the junk."
Sustainable Food Systems is back in the region on a fact-finding mission, thanks to a grassroots effort in the Kanawha Valley. It's touring the kitchens of the Kanawha County school system.
April Hamilton is a local chef with kids in school.
"We can do better," Hamilton says. "It's a change. Change is hard, and we're just working with a group of interested community leaders, and we're bringing it to the school board ... I've gotten a great reception."
There has been no commitment from the Kanawha County School board, at this point. Sustainable Food Systems will present its findings and recommendations to the school board on Friday, Oct. 29.
