HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Tom Herrion is out as basketball coach at Marshall University.
The announcement was officially made at a press conference Friday afternoon.
Herrion had an overall record of 67-67 in his four seasons at Marshall.
Herrion said, "I have decided it is in the best interest of all parties that I resign my position as head basketball coach of Marshall University."
Marshall Athletic Director Mike Hamrick said Friday that basketball has to be successful at Marshall and that "we've made a commitment to basketball."
Harmick said he has high expectations and he sense apathy in the fan base.
This year the Thundering Herd lost in the 2nd round of the Conference USA tournament to finish the season 11-22.
"We will start the search immediately and I believe we'll have good candidates. I will not comment on names," Hamrick said.
When it comes to the next coach, Hamrick said, "I want someone who can win and reignite the fan base."
Herrion's buyout is about $550,000 over two years. It will be paid with private money and ticket revenue.

Marshall has lost 41 games in the past two years, the most losses in back to back seasons in school history.
According to Hamrick's twitter account, the press conference will be held at 1:45 p.m. Friday to discuss the direction of the men's basketball program.
No other details were announced.
The Herd's record this season was 11-22, winning only four of 16 conference games.
