CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Low-income West Virginia parents are bracing for higher child care costs.
A state program that helps these parents afford day care is hiking its copayments starting Wednesday.
Parents now pay between nothing and 5 percent of care costs. The copayment will rise for all parents to 12 percent of costs.
Crystal Habjan is one of those parents. The full-time dental assistant from Fayette County has been paying $2.25 a day to keep her daughter at a care center while she works. Habjan said her daily cost will increase to $8.75.
The single mother says she hopes she can afford the increase. Habjan said she otherwise faces some hard choices.
Program officials note that West Virginia's copayments remain much lower than that of its neighboring states.
