CHESAPEAKE, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Mark Letchkiw says there's nothing he wouldn't do to protect his family.

"I'd give my own life for my wife and kid, they're everything I have in this world," he said.

Monday morning he proved it, when police say he fought off two armed men who broke into his home in Chesapeake, West Virginia.

"Two guys in ski masks started screaming, 'Give us the money,'" said wife Melissa Stanely. "[We said,] 'We don't have anything here.'"

The couple woke up just after 7 a.m. to the sound of breaking glass - a brick thrown through their 17-year-old daughter's window.

Letchkiw says he began to fight the men off, but they held him down and sprayed him with mace.

"It's still burning," he said. "Oh man...my nose was running."

He says the men were smart about covering their tracks, using boards to hide their footprints and even cutting the cord to the family's security camera.

But in the end, Letchkiw says he was smarter. He got the attackers out of the home by claiming to have money on his body and luring them outside.

His wife then locked the door.

"I'm pretty much in fear," she said. "I don't know how I'll ever be able to sleep again here knowing someone can get in that quickly."

The family says they had noticed a stranger lurking near their home just two days earlier.

The suspects did not get away with any money or property. Letchkiw says they fired several warning shots into the air before leaving.

Chesapeake Police say they're looking at several persons of interest..
