UPDATE 10/2/13 @ 9:15 p.m.
BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Firefighters from three departments battled a fire that did extensive damage a home in the 7000 block of Mud River Road.

Flames were shooting from an attached garage when firefighters from Barboursville, Green Valley and Ohio River Road volunteer fire departments arrived. The fire was reported just after 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Barboursville firefighters believe the fire started in the back of the garage and spread to the attic.

The homeowner was home when the fire started and got out okay. The family's pet cat died in the fire.

Firefighters say fighting the fire was challenging because of the distance to the nearest hydrant.

The cause of the fire was unknown late Wednesday.
