HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- You can now find the Huntington Police Department in your local App store.
The department has rolled out a one stop safety app entitled "Heads Up Huntington."
"Social media is key to getting the word out," says Chief Skip Holbrook. "Any time we can provide more information that's going to reduce potential call volumes to emergencies that drain our resources, that's a good thing."
The App can be custom tailored to the smart phone owner's needs. It prioritizes events from Level One to Level Five, with Five being a major emergency.
"After the derecho of last year, there were a lot of things that failed. But what didn't fail was people's smart phones," says Scott Lemley with the Huntington Police Department. "So people were going out the car to charge their smart phones to go on WSAZ to find out what was going on. Now we can relay that information to the public very quickly."
The App is a comprehensive push notification system for police, fire, utilities and vital school information.
The goal is decrease the panic level and prepare residents in case of emergency.
The App is available right now on Google Play. It's expected to be on Apple's App Store by week's end.
The Heads Up Huntington App is free.
