UPDATE: Applications Being Accepted after Death of Huntington Councilman

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- After the death of Huntington Councilman Jim Ritter, the city is accepting applications to fill his seat.

Anyone interested in filling the District 1 Council seat, which is the Westmoreland area, should submit an application to the City Clerk's Office by June 12 at 4:30 p.m.

The application should include the applicants name, address, phone number, education, work experience and civic involvement. The application must be signed before the City Clerk or a Notary Public.

Qualifications for consideration as a member of Huntington's City Council are as follows:

  • Shall be a citizen of the United States and the State of West Virginia
  • Shall be a qualified elector and resident of the City and of District 1 and shall remain a resident of said district during the term of office
  • Members shall not during their term of office hold any other public office, be a member of any political executive committee or be an employee of the City

    HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Long time Huntington City Councilman Jim Ritter has died, according to the Huntington Mayor's Office.

    Ritter passed away late Thursday night at the Hospice House in Huntington after a long battle with illness.

    Ritter had served on Huntington's city council for nearly two decades, representing the Westmoreland district. He stepped down from his position earlier this year due to his declining health.

    Jim Ritter was 67-years-old.
