UPDATE 5/16/13 @ 5:30 p.m.
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Road work is causing some issues for drivers on I-64, but workers have tried to make things a little safer at the Hal Greer on ramp.
West Virginia Paving and the West Virginia Department of Highways have installed rumble strips and more "Stop Ahead" signs to warn drivers entering the interstate.
In addition, crews added "Merge Left" signs on the eastbound lanes before the on ramp to warn drivers that traffic is entering the interstate.
WV Paving and the WVDOH urge all drivers to obey the 50mph speed limit that is posted in the construction area.
The project is expected to be finished by September 28, 2014.
"It's very tight through here," WVDOH Construction Engineer Chris Collins said. "There's not much room for error, so we're urging people to obey the speed limit."
The project will widen I-64 between Hal Greer Boulevard and Route 60.
"The biggest problem is speed," Collins said. "It's goes from 65 mph to 50 mph, and people need to pay close attention to the traffic signs."
One change, drivers will notice, is there will be more signs leading up on the entrance ramp on I-64 at Hal Greer Boulevard. It is a complete stop before merging into traffic. That sign is blocked from sight leading up the ramp.
"We do understand it's not best-case scenario for the situation," Collins said. "We are in the process of looking at some alternatives and making some changes in that area."
The construction project will take place between Exit 11, Hal Greer, and Exit 15, 29th Street.
The work was originally set to begin on March 11, but West Virginia Paving has been forced to delay the project every week, the past four weeks due to weather, according to the Division of Highways.
The latest start date was Thursday, April 4.
The project consists of adding an additional lane in both directions on the median side of the road, installing a median concrete barrier, and replacing the Cedar Crest Bridge with a new six-lane structure.
Jack Withrow with West Virginia Paving tells WSAZ.com that there will not be any more delays on the project.
Withrow says they will start Monday night with some milling up of the old pavement and paving the shoulders in preparation for installing barrier walls around the median.
The project is expected to be finished by September 28, 2014.
