SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Part of an international smartphone scam ring was busted Wednesday by South Charleston Police.
Johnny Bledsoe and Sarah Coogan were picked up by SCPD officers for charges that they failed to appear in court on drug-related charges in Maryland.
But, according to Sgt. F.S. Beane, their troubles don't end there.
The pair is being looked at in connection to an international smartphone scam.
Beane said the pair was paying people $50 to get a contract on a smartphone at Walmart and never use the phone.
They would turn around and give the phone right back to Bledsoe and Coogan, who would allegedly then sell the phones internationally for a markup of anywhere from $300 to $500.
Beane said the pair did this at Walmart stores in several states.
The case regarding the phones will be handled at the federal level.
