KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Kanawha County leaders have honored the 2013 Deputy of the Year.
Corporal John Ratliff was given the honor Thursday at the Kanawha County Commission meeting.
Corporal Ratliff was recognized for his role in a shooting arrest back in February.
That is when a former corrections officer pulled out a gun and fired shots in front of Point Harmony Elementary School in Cross Lanes.
Commissioners say his actions throughout the entire ordeal spoke volumes about his character as a member of the Sheriff's Department.
Ratliff told WSAZ.com that he is honored by the award but his main motivation in his career is protecting and serving the families in Kanawha County.
