Kids Help Get Brother and Pets Out of Burning Home

MILTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Kids returning home from school sprang into action Tuesday when they walked up their driveway and saw their home burning and knew their little brother and pets were inside.

Rebekka Venoy is a senior at Cabell Midland High School.

She and two of her brothers got off the bus at their driveway along Newman's Branch in Milton.

When they walked to the top of the hill, they saw their home burning.

Their little brother is in elementary school and rides an earlier bus. The parents were at work.

"It scared me,” Venoy said. “That was the first thing that went in my head – got to save family."

The kids dropped their backpacks and ran into the home, first saving their 11-year-old brother, then their cat and dog.

"I went in the house because we had no idea where our brother was, where our dog was, no idea where the cat was, so we went in,” Venoy said. “I know you're not supposed to, but we had to get them out."

The kids called 911.

“When we arrived here, there were flames in the front yard and the front of the house,” Jason Chastain with the Milton Volunteer Fire Department said. “We got that out, and then we found flames in the kitchen on the inside of the house. We got that knocked out."

They say this Thanksgiving, although they've lost a lot, they're more grateful for each other than ever.

“It's bad it happened, but I'm glad everybody got out OK," Venoy said.

The fire marshal is investigating what caused the fire.

Venoy says it appears the fire started on the outside of the house, which is why the brother didn’t realize there was a fire until the siblings arrived.

The family is now staying with relatives.
