NEW YORK (WSAZ) -- New York City's a long way from Logan County, W.Va., but Sarah Vance has a smile that says, it's worth the trip.
Vance was Monday's winner of Live with Kelly and Michael's "A New You in New York" makeover. It's the popular daytime talk show's contest, saluting Mom's around the country, as the calendar leads up to Mother's Day on Sunday, May 12.
"I am truly, truly, thankful to be here and share my story," Vance told WSAZ.com in the green room, a few minutes after being whisked off the set. "I'm living proof good things can come from the bad, if you just believe."
Vance is a cancer survivor. At 16 years old, the southern West Virginia native was diagnosed with leukemia. She's been cancer free now since 2001, but she's since grown her hair on several occasions to donate it to Locks of Love -- an organization that takes human hair and uses it to make wigs for cancer patients.
"I've been there, I know how traumatizing that can be," Vance said. "The donation may seem like a small thing, but it makes a big difference."
She told her story to millions of people watching Kelly and Michael. Both TV stars had their mouths open in disbelief and amazement as Vance walked out with her new hair, makeup and wardrobe.
"You look incredible!" Kelly Ripa said. "How do you feel?"
With a big grin on her face, Vance answered back with the same word, three times. "Amazing! Amazing! Amazing!"
Vance's story is just one of several being showcased on Live with Kelly and Michael during the next several days. Throughout the week, you'll see more moms sharing their stories.
The highly rated TV program will profile people like Carolyn Hillesheim, who hasn't cut her hair in 40 years, and new mom Jillian Hamilton, who's wants a new look as she heads back to work after maternity leave.
You can catch Live with Kelly and Michael at 10 a.m. Monday through Friday on WSAZ NewsChannel 3. While you're at it, you may want to give your own mom a big hug.
