UPDATE: Man Accused of Getting Girl with Autism Pregnant; Parents Speak Out

UPDATE 2/4/14 @ 6:10 p.m.
PUTNAM COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A man trusted to be a mentor to a young girl with autism is in jail -- accused of sexually abusing her.

Wendell and Geneva Rose have spent the past 13 years raising a daughter with autism. Now, their daughter is pregnant.

“We never thought this would happen,” Wendell said.

The Roses met Justin Matthew Vance, 28, through the Special Olympics while he was volunteering.

Vance was helping them with home projects and needed a place to stay, so they offered him their couch.

“You try to be a nice person or try to do the right thing, and it always backfires on you,” Geneva said.

This past fall, Putnam County Sheriff’s deputies received a complaint that Vance was sexually abusing the girl.

“This is a case that offends every sense of morality in you,” Lt. Ryan Lockhart said.

At first, there was no proof. Vance moved out, but the Rose's still couldn't believe he would hurt their little girl. That is until a recent doctor's visit when the truth came out.

“Let's just say that he's in a very safe place now,” Wendell said. “When I was told that my daughter was pregnant with his child, I had mixed emotions. I was very angry at him, to say the least.”

And so their bittersweet journey as grandparents begins.

“That baby's innocent,” Wendell said. “That baby had no control over why it's here. I can't punish that baby; I can't punish my baby for something that this guy did.”

Deputies say the doctors and Child Protective Services (CPS) are having a difficult time explaining to the girl what pregnancy is.

The Rose’s say their daughter is currently staying with her aunt and is being home schooled.

WSAZ reached out to Vance to get his side of the story. He declined our request for an interview.

ORIGINAL STORY 2/4/14
PUTNAM COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A man accused of impregnating a 13-year-old girl who has autism has been arrested and charged with 1st degree sexual assault.

Putnam County Deputies arrested Justin Matthew Vance, 28, of Liberty, Monday night.

According to the criminal complaint filed in Putnam County Magistrate Court, the alleged victim told investigators that Vance was living with her at the time, and they had slept together on the couch and they had also kissed.

When a doctor explained to the victim what sex was, she initially denied that it had happened.

It was when the doctor told her that was the only way she could have become pregnant, that she admitted to having sex with Vance, according to the complaint.

The girl claims that her parents were sleeping at the time of the sexual encounter.

Vance is being held in the Western Regional Jail on $250,000 bail.

If released, he cannot have physical or verbal contact with the victim.
