SCIOTO COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- A man charged with robbing a grocery store in Portsmouth told police he stole liquor so he could trade it for heroin.

Portsmouth Police charged Nathan Payton of Portsmouth with aggravated robbery after they say he robbed the Kroger on Gay Street Tuesday afternoon.

Detectives say Payton entered the store and loaded a bag with a variety of top shelf liquors.

Employees who confronted Payton said he pulled out a pocket knife and said, "It's not worth it."

The employees then followed Payton outside and wrote down the license plate on his getaway car.

Police stopped the car a short time later. Detectives say Payton actually tricked his friend into giving him a ride. The friend does not face any criminal charges.

Police say Payton is also the suspect in a similar heist at the same store Monday night.
