KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A man is behind bars after police say he hurt a 15-month-old baby girl in Kanawha County.
Deputies say the girl was brought to the emergency room Thursday night.
The little girl's aunt thought she had an allergic reaction to something she ate. Doctors examined the baby and noticed bruising, swelling and cuts on her face and determined that it didn't happen on accident.
Detectives say the injuries happened while the baby was in the care of Jeremy Freeman.
According to the criminal complaint, a witness saw Freeman take the child into a bedroom and place her in a playpen for a nap. The witness goes on to tell police they heard the child cry and noises that sounded like "smacking."
A short time later, when the witness saw the child again, she saw the facial injuries.
Freeman has been charged with child abuse resulting in injury.
The child's aunt says alcohol was a factor. She claims Freeman is a recovering alcoholic and had a relapse.
