CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A man was left clinging to life after being the target of a violent home invasion robbery Wednesday afternoon, according to police.

Investigators say it happened in broad daylight at his home in the 700 block of Grace Avenue. They say the robbers stole several items from the home while brutally assaulting the man.

"We believe this was a targeted incident ... it wasn't random," Charleston Police Detective Jeremy Tate said.

Police say a family member found the victim unconscious after the attack and immediately called for help. He suffered several broken bones to his face, bruises on his body and a brain hemorrhage.

The attack has neighbors along Grace Avenue fearing for their own safety.

"This is generally a safe neighborhood ... I don't know how this could have happened," Ellen Vance said. "I'm going to be looking over my shoulder a lot more."

The victim remains in critical condition. Police aren't identifying him at this time but say he was 30 years old and had a large, muscular build that would have required a lot of force to overcome.

Charleston Police say they're looking for any information that could help them solve this crime.
