WIRT COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ)—The search for an elderly man with dementia ended on a positive note Sunday afternoon.

Police found 73-year-old William Ray Barton in a barn not far from where his car was found in the Palestine area.

“I'm tickled to death I thought this was going to be the last time,” Barton’s son William Barton said of his father’s rescue.

Nearly 60 first responders and volunteers searched for Barton Sunday using a helicopter, search dogs and knocking door-to-door.

“We are the smallest county in West Virginia by populations but have some of the the biggest hearts,” Wirt County Office of Emergency Services Director Edwin Wriston.

Barton’s son tells WSAZ.com this was not the first time his father went missing though it was the longest. He said Barton doesn’t realize how long he was gone.

“He doesn't have a clue, he thought he was at home last night,” William said, adding a family member will likely drive with Barton from now on.

“He won't be travelling alone,” William said, ”He's lost his drivers license, he doesn't know it yet but maybe when he sees this on TV he'll realize he's not driving.”
