CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- "He just needed drugs. That's what he needed," said Stan Wright, the victim of a robbery Monday night.
That’s why Wright says a man came to his door, saying his car was broken down and he needed to use the phone and the bathroom.
So, Wright played the Good Samaritan. That’s when the man pulled a gun and demanded money, drugs and anything of value.
But he didn’t get away with much -- just a little cash and Wright’s cell phone.
“All for 22 bucks," Wright said. "I mean, it doesn't make any sense. I mean, he'll spend at least a year in jail, and I will go to court and do what I’m supposed to do."
Wright got a good enough look at the robber to draw a sketch for police to help in their search.
"Actually turned his back, and I had a fifth of brandy and I could have clobbered him, but it would have probably killed him and I didn't want that," Wright said.
And Wright wants the robber caught and prosecuted, but he also wants to see him get some help.
"He's liable to hurt somebody or hurt himself, and he's inept at robbing so he needs to find another job," Wright said.
Wright was only doing what he thought was right. But, police say to be cautious when someone comes knocking on your door.
"Wait right here, I'll make a call for you," Charleston Police Lt. Duke Jordan said. "Or if you're really that nervous, call the police. We don't mind coming by and taking a look at the situation, as well."
