UPDATE 10/30/10 @ 7:30 p.m.
WINFIELD, W. Va. (WSAZ) -- A soldier was laid to rest for the second time Saturday afternoon.
Confederate Captain Philip James Thurmond died 150 years ago and was buried in Winfield, but not with the proper honors. A second burial this weekend allowed people to pay respect where it's due.
Confederate flags flew high to commemorate the second burial of the Captain.
"Our world would do well if it were filled with people like Captain Thurmond," said Al Stone, who played Robert E. Lee at the reenactment ceremony.
The soldier was buried with full military honors and the proper markers that Thurmond didn't receive the first time around. It was a special day for everyone, especially those able to call him family.
"It means a lot to me that they thought that much of him that they came out here to do this," said Cynthia Hayes, Thurmond's great-great granddaughter.
A procession complete with Civil War re-reenactors to ensure a time-authentic burial.
"By doing this we have perpetuated a spot for the younger generation in years to come when they read about it in the history book," said Stone.
A ceremony that shed light on Captain Thurmond's noble career.
"He died for all of us, trying to fight for all of us, trying to fight to save us because he loved his family and his county," said Hayes.
Almost a century and a half later, a soldier is finally laid to rest the proper way.
"I feel like now I can at least come up here and visit him sometimes. I didn't even know where he was or anything, but now I can actually come up and put a flower on his grave anytime I feel like it," said Hayes.
A testament to history -- bringing Thurmond's death to life.
His body now rests at the new site of the Hoge House, next to the Putnam Courthouse.
Captain Philip Thurmond was buried in an unmarked grave nearly 200 years ago. On Saturday, Civil war reenactors will give Thurmond a funeral with full military honors. He will be laid to rest beside the historic Hoge House in Winfield.
The funeral procession will leave Chapman Funeral Home at noon Saturday and proceed along Route 817 to Courthouse Drive. During this time both lanes of 817 from the funeral home to Winfield Middle School will be closed.
