Mine Activity Caused Loud Noise in Kanawha County
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Work at a mine appears to be the source behind a loud noise that many people heard and felt in and around the Kanawha Valley.
Dozens of people called Metro 911 just after 5 p.m. on Tuesday after they heard a loud noise that rocked their neighborhoods. Some people even reported to dispatchers their homes shook during the incident.
Kanawha County Commission President Kent Carper says the Department of Environmental Protection reports the noise came from mine activity in the Rush Creek area. That's about five miles from Charleston.
Immediately, emergency crews, along with the DEP launched an investigation to find what caused the disruption. The exact cause wasn't found until Wednesday afternoon.
Carper says the mine did not violate any laws or rules, but the activity along with weather conditions created a lot of dust and allowed the noise to travel farther.
