FAYETTE COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Elsie is Jamie Buckland’s third child and the only baby she had through natural birth, a decision she says she’s glad she made.
"I don't think you can replace the hormones and the high that you get when you are able to experience every moment of an empowered birth where you are in control of everything, where your body is in control, and there's nothing artificial about it," said Jamie Buckland of the website improvingbirth.org.
That’s why she and other people took to the streets in Beckley on Monday. They spread their message that natural child birth without surgery or inductions is the way for both baby and mom to stay healthy during and after the birth.
"The health of the baby is the bond with mom," Buckland said.
Buckland said that bond with mom is what is taken when unnecessary C-sections are performed.
Improvingbirth.org says inductions lead to more surgical births which, in turn, lead to a higher mortality rate.
And that’s one of the issues they want to address.
"There are emergency scenarios where a C-section is needed, where a woman does need to be induced. Those do happen, but it's become the norm," Buckland said.
But the best norm for mom and baby, they say, is natural.
