PUTNAM COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A mother and her boyfriend are under arrest after police say a 3-year-old boy was abused and nearly suffocated.
Emily Arthur and Joseph Thacker were both charged with child abuse resulting in injury Thursday afternoon.
Police say it was the young boy's father who knew his son's injuries were no accident. After he saw the bruises and scratches, he took his son to the hospital to get checked out.
Putnam County Sheriff's detectives soon got involved and found the child suffered scratches and bruises on his face, ribs and back, among other places. Investigators suspect it all happened at their home in Hurricane.
Arthur is the victim's mother and works as a trauma room nurse. She told detectives the boy suffered injuries from playing outside and falling from his bed and onto the end table one night. However, police say that story didn't match up to the injuries.
Detectives tell WSAZ.com Arthur's boyfriend, Joseph Thacker, practically suffocated the child while he was trying to help him blow his nose.
The 3-year-old even admitted to police, "Joe Joe covers my mouth and he throws me." according to the criminal complaint.
A doctor determined the injuries were not accidental.
"Obviously any time a child's involved that's the worst type of crimes that we would have," Sergeant Ryan Lockhart said. "It's difficult. It's difficult for the child, it's difficult for all parties involved."
Arthur did post a $10,000 bond and Thacker remains in jail in lieu of a $50,000 bond.
The boy is expected to be okay and did not suffer and permanent injuries.
